Pickup Truck Trends for 2020

Pickup Truck Trends for 2020

2020 has started off as one of the most memorable years for many, and with pickup trucks, there are many exciting trends to enjoy!

It’s not even half over yet, but 2020 has already been one of the craziest years that most of us can remember. Some things, however, stay the same and each year, we at BACKRACK™ like to review some of the newest and most prominent truck trends for the year. And despite the corona craziness, there are many exciting trends in pickup trucks this year.

Bigger, Stronger Full-Size Trucks

Full-size pickup trucks are bigger and more impressive than ever. The demand for these vehicles was just as impressive as sales soared in 2019 with the Big Three automakers selling 2,338,114 of these vehicles according to statistics by Good Car, Bad Car. The top selling large truck was Ford’s F Series and Rangers with Dodge Ram taking the second spot.

Midsize Trucks Are Back

Midsize pickup trucks disappeared from the market about nine years ago due to low demand, but today they are back. General Motors brought back an improved and slightly larger version of its midsize truck several years ago. This spurred Ford to do the same recently, and now there is rumour that Fiat Chrysler is preparing to bring back a revived version of the Dakota. But all the major automakers and looking to revive their middles as the demand for these vehicles is once again increasing.

Improved Efficiency

Improved efficiency is a feature that seems to be on our list of pickup truck trends nearly every year – but that’s just because these trucks keep getting better and better! Even though gas prices are currently low, now one wants to spend more filling their tank then they have to. As a result, fuel efficiency is always going to be a great selling feature for any vehicle.

Canada’s best-selling vehicle, for example – the F-150, won’t change a whole lot in appearance but you will see a more efficient V8 engine. (And with an electric model currently in testing, we could see some very interesting developments in the years ahead.

Pickup truck sales eclipsing car sales

Perhaps one of the most interesting truck trends to come out of 2020 is not a specific truck feature, but that for the first time in April of this year, sales of pickup trucks eclipsed sales of passenger cars. This was caused in part by a decline in car sales due to the financial fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the fact that many dealers offered zero percent interest loans on pickup trucks to help improve sales.

While we don’t know what the rest of 2020 has in store for us, we do know that pickup trucks will continue to be vital tools for essential workers such as farmers and tradespeople as well as for many others.
